US Stamps - J - Postage Due

Introduced in the United States in 1879, postage due (Scott #J--) stamps were affixed by a mail clerk to an envelope in order to indicate insufficient postage and how much money the addressee had to pay to receive the mail. The large numeral on the stamp indicated the amount due by the individual.
