While Canada's basic railway system was in place by 1905, the ensuing two decades witnessed a doubling in mileage caused by the construction of two additional transcontinental main lines - Grand Trunk Pacific and Canadian Northern opened respectively in 1914 and 1915 - plus the addition of new secondary main and branch lines.
