Description
After liberation from the Khmer Rouge regime, Kampuchea (also known as Cambodia) began issuing stamps again in 1980. These first stamps issued after liberation were inscribed "République Populaire du Kampuchéa" or "RPK". A major motion picture, The Killing Fields, served to sensitize people to the genocide which occurred in the nation during the Pol Pot years, from 1975-79. Anyone perceived to be an intellectual was massacred in an attempt by the government to eradicate modernism and western ideals. Even the wearing of glasses was seen to be a sign of intellectualism. During these years, even the postal service was interrupted and no stamps were issued.
