Description
Sudan is the largest north African country. It is bordered by Egypt and Ethiopia and run through by the Nile River. The history of Sudan dates back to antiquity and the Kingdom of Cush. The early, modern history of the country is marked by intermingling periods of Egyptian and British control and the recent genocide in Darfur. Despite many troubles, the Sudanese have a rich and diverse culture and are known for being very hospitable. Postal services effectively ended when the British pulled out in 1885, but were restarted for the military in 1896 with their attempted reconquest. However, the first actual stamps of Sudan were only issued in 1897.
